Sustainable Weaving materials
The materials for our baskets are locally sourced from Ghanaian and Kenyan farmers. The local artisans hand-weave with the following natural materials
ELEPHANT GRASS
The elephant grass( Pennisetum Purpureum)

Elephant grass is the foundation of every handwoven Bolga basket, making it a key material in sustainable, eco-friendly baskets from Ghana. Grown abundantly in northern Ghana, this natural fiber is known for its exceptional strength, flexibility, and durability. It is perfect for creating long-lasting, handmade storage baskets and home décor.
Harvested responsibly by local communities, elephant grass is a renewable and biodegradable material, making it an ideal choice for those seeking plastic-free, sustainable home products. After harvesting, the grass is dried, softened, and carefully prepared by artisans before it is woven by hand into beautiful, functional baskets.
Its natural texture and earthy tones bring warmth and authenticity into any space, aligning perfectly with slow living, conscious interiors, and natural home styling. At the same time, its strength ensures that each basket is not only decorative but also practical for everyday use.
By choosing baskets made from elephant grass, you are supporting sustainable materials, traditional African craftsmanship, and ethical production, while bringing a piece of nature into your home
SISAL

The sisal (Agave Sisalana) is a flowering plant that has a lifespan of 7-10 years . The plant produces a thick fibre that is used in making robes and twines. Our sisal robes are sourced from Kenya.
RECYCLED PLASTIC

Some Nokupa basket bags are woven using recycled plastic strips, transforming waste material into durable, weather-resistant home accessories. This is plastic-free living in reverse: instead of avoiding plastic, we give it a second life. Locally sourced and hand-processed alongside natural fibres, it is another way Nokupa reduces waste and supports circular craft traditions.
