Bridging homes through Craft, Culture, and Purpose

I am Norkor Naate-Kivimaa, a Ghanaian woman whose journey brought me from the vibrant city of Accra to the serene landscapes of Finland in 2010. I came with a dream to pursue higher education, build a meaningful career, and immerse myself in a new culture. I trained and worked as a registered nurse, and over time, Finland became my second home. Yet, no matter how far life carried me, my heart remained rooted in Ghana.

In Finland, I fell in love with the calm and intentional way of life, the deep respect for nature, the simplicity of design, and the beauty of natural textures and colors. The Finnish homes I entered reflected harmony, functionality, and a quiet elegance. I began to imagine something powerful: what if people’s homes in Finland and across Europe could carry a piece of Ghana? What if women could have something that tells a story from my homeland?

That vision became No-kupa, meaning “Norkor Gives.” “Kupa” from swahili and Shona (Zimbabwe) that means -to give.

A Story Woven Between Two Worlds

Growing up in Accra, I witnessed the strength of women every day specifically the female head porters (Kayayei) in local markets in Accra, Ghana. These women carry heavy loads on their heads to support their families, often sacrificing education and opportunities for survival. Many of them come from rural northern Ghana, where generations of women have mastered the art of basket weaving. This craft is more than a skill, it is heritage, identity, and storytelling. But too often, these talented women are forced to leave their villages in search of income, leaving behind a tradition that deserves recognition. I knew there had to be a way to change this.

Empowering Women Through Sustainable Basket Weaving

In the sun drenched villages of northern Ghana, specifically Zorkor, skilled female artisans create hand-woven baskets and bags using sustainably sourced natural fibers. Each piece is unique, rich in texture, color, and meaning. These are not just products; they are woven narratives of resilience, culture, and hope. Through Nokupa, we bring these beautiful, eco-friendly baskets to Finland and Europe creating a bridge between cultures.

Every purchase directly supports the women who make them, providing:

  • Fair and sustainable income
  • Access to education for their children
  • Preservation of traditional craftsmanship
