Our Story

I am Norkor Naate-Kivimaa, a Ghanaian who embarked on a journey to Finland with the dream of gaining higher education and immersing myself in a new culture. My experiences in Finland have been enriching, opening my eyes to the beauty of nature, the depth of cultural exchange, and the transformative power of education. As I embraced my new life, my heart remained deeply connected to my roots in Ghana and the vibrant traditions of my homeland. I also developed a profound admiration for the subtle Finnish design culture, which beautifully focuses on nature and respects its essence. I am intrigued by the natural colors that Finns incorporate into everyday life, creating serene and harmonious living spaces.

I imagined every Finnish home as well as homes all over the world incorporating something from my homeland Ghana into its design and every Finnish woman and women all over the world using an accessory made from my country.

This led me to a pivotal question: How could I do good in both of these countries that I call home? This is what gave birth to Nokupa. The meaning of Nokupa is "Norkor Gives." I have to give to Finland and to Ghana. The remarkable tradition of basket weaving will fit perfectly into Finnish design.

In the serene, sun-dappled villages of Ghana and Kenya, a remarkable tradition thrives—basket weaving. This craft, passed down through generations, is more than just a means of making a living; it is a vibrant expression of culture, community, and creativity. Skilled female artisans in these regions intertwine raw materials sourced sustainably from their surroundings, creating stunning, one-of-a-kind baskets and bags that tell stories of their land and lives.

These baskets are not just products; they are woven narratives of resilience and hope. Each piece reflects the dedication and artistry of women who have mastered ancient techniques, turning natural fibers into intricate patterns and vibrant designs. The materials used are harvested with care, ensuring that the environment remains unharmed and the tradition of sustainable living is upheld.

However, beyond their beauty and craftsmanship, these baskets serve a greater purpose. In many of these communities, economic opportunities are limited, and children often have to work on farms to help support their families. This reality deprives them of education and the chance to build a better future.

Driven by a desire to create positive change, I founded Nokupa to bring these exquisite baskets to Finland. Our aim is to create a market for these woven wonders, offering the Finnish community as well as the world a chance to own a piece of African heritage while making a meaningful impact. Each basket sold directly supports the talented female weavers, providing them with a fair income that enables them to send their children to school.

In Finland, and all over the world, these baskets and bags find new homes, adorning living spaces with their unique charm and serving as daily reminders of a global connection. They symbolize a bridge between cultures, a partnership that empowers and uplifts. When you purchase one of these baskets/bags, you are not just acquiring a beautiful item; you are participating in a movement that champions sustainability, education, and women's empowerment.

Imagine a world where children can focus on their studies, dream freely, and build bright futures. Picture the weavers, proud and dignified, knowing their work is valued and that their children have opportunities they never had. This is the vision we are weaving together—one basket at a time.

Join us in this journey. Embrace the beauty of sustainably woven baskets/bags from Ghana and Kenya, and become a part of a story that celebrates tradition, nurtures the environment, and transforms lives. Together, through Nokupa, we can ensure that the hands that weave these baskets today can build a better tomorrow for generations to come.
