Nokupa -What we do
Nokupa is a Finland-based sustainable brand founded in 2024 by Norkor Naate-Kivimaa to share the beauty of African culture with the world.
We serve customers who value authenticity, slow living, and meaningful design with rooted belonging while ensuring that every purchase supports artisan families and strengthens their communities
Nokupa partners with skilled female artisans in rural Ghana to create handwoven baskets rooted in tradition, culture, and craftsmanship. Artisans attach their names to the basket they made.
Each piece is ethically made using sustainable materials and traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations.
..KUPA...means to give in the swahili and Shona languages of Kenya and Zimbabwe and the prefix ...*No*..is the beginning of the name Norkor hence the name NOKUPA.....meaning Norkor gives to both Finland and Ghana. Everyone gets something.
Handwoven Heritage. Conscious Living.
Ghana
Ghana, located in West Africa, is known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and strong traditions. It was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957, and today it is home to an estimated 33 million people. While the country continues to grow and develop, many communities, especially in the north, still face limited economic opportunities.
In the capital city of Accra, are many young women known as kayayei (female head porters) who travel from rural northern Ghana in search of a better livelihood. They carry heavy loads in crowded markets, often from morning until late evening, earning just enough to survive each day. Their strength and determination are remarkable, yet their reality is often very difficult.
Many kayayei live in temporary shelters or sleep in open spaces, without safe or stable housing. Access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare is limited, making everyday life challenging. In such vulnerable conditions, they can also face risks to their safety, including exploitation and abuse. Despite these hardships, they continue to work tirelessly, supporting not only themselves but often their families back home.
At the same time, northern Ghana holds a beautiful and deeply rooted tradition, Bolga basket weaving. For generations, women have transformed locally grown elephant grass into strong, intricate baskets. Today, tens of thousands of artisans, mostly women, are part of this craft, carrying forward knowledge passed down through centuries.
Yet even with this extraordinary skill, many artisans struggle to earn a stable income. Limited access to global markets and fair pricing means weaving alone is often not enough to sustain their livelihoods. This is what leads many women to leave their craft behind and migrate to cities like Accra, where they become kayayei.
There is, however, another path. When handwoven Bolga baskets are valued and purchased, they create steady, meaningful income for women in their own communities. This allows them to stay, to continue their craft, and to care for their families with dignity. It also helps ensure that children can go to school and experience childhood, rather than being drawn into cycles of hardship.
Through conscious choices, it becomes possible to support not only a product, but a different future, one where tradition is preserved, women are empowered, and communities can thrive, one basket at a time.
Mission
At Nokupa, our mission is to create meaningful impact through handmade baskets, ethical craftsmanship, and sustainable living, connecting people, culture, and conscious homes around the world.
1. Every Woman Deserves a Dignified Life. We believe every woman deserves the opportunity to earn a fair income through her skills. By supporting women artisans in Ghana, we help create sustainable livelihoods that provide access to food, clothing, and essential needs, thus empowering women in the rural areas of Ghana with independence and long-term stability.
2. Education Begins with Empowered Mothers. We believe education is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty. By selling handwoven Bolga baskets, these women can support their families and send their children to school, thus creating brighter futures for the next generation.
3. Every Child Deserves a Childhood. All children should have the freedom to learn, play, and grow. By supporting ethical, handmade products, we help create homes where children are not forced into work but are given the chance to experience education and childhood fully.
4. Conscious Living through Sustainable Home Décor. We believe in slow living and sustainable home design. In a world of fast fashion and mass production, our eco-friendly handmade baskets made from natural materials bring calm, warmth, and authenticity into modern homes. Inspired by the Scandinavian hygge lifestyle, we promote spaces that support wellbeing, reduce stress, and encourage mindful living.
5. Celebrating African Craftsmanship and Cultural Connection. We believe in honoring and sharing culture through design. Our handcrafted African baskets and bags celebrate traditional weaving techniques while connecting global homes to the beauty of Ghanaian heritage. Each piece tells a story, preserving culture while creating a bridge between communities.
