How to clean and maintain handmade baskets made from Elephant grass.

Handmade baskets crafted from elephant grass  are not only beautiful but also functional. These baskets are popularly known as Bolga baskets.  However, cleaning and maintaining Bolga baskets  can be challenging if you do not know what you are doing. Here are some effective strategies to keep your baskets looking great.

1.Regular Dusting at least once a week.

Use a soft, dry cloth or a duster to remove dust and dirt from your Bolga basket. Regular dusting prevents dirt build-up, without doing cleaning later can be more difficult.

2.Spot Cleaning

For small stains, dampen a soft cloth with a mild soap solution. Gently rub the affected area without soaking the basket, as frequent exposure to excessive moisture can cause the grass to weaken.

3.Deep Cleaning

If your elephant grass basket needs a thorough clean, submerge it briefly in a basin of lukewarm water with mild detergent. Avoid prolonged soaking, as this can damage the fibers. Rinse gently and reshape the basket with your hands while wet.

4.Drying

Always air dry your baskets in a shaded area. Exposure to prolonged periods of direct sunlight can fade colors and cause the fibre to become brittle which will lead to breaking.

5.Storage

Store your baskets in a cool, dry place, avoiding areas with high humidity. Doing this will help maintain basket shape and prevent mold growth.

6.Deodorizing

To remove odors, from a Bolga basket made from elephant grass, place a sachet of baking soda inside the basket and let it sit overnight. Baking soda absorbs odors without damaging the material.

7.Sunlight Exposure

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this can cause the grass to become brittle and break. Colors will fade over time if baskets are left for prolonged periods under direct sunlight.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your elephant grass basket will remain durable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Proper care not only preserves the beauty of these handmade pieces but also extends their lifespan.
